Depression

YOU CAN LIVE A HAPPY LIFE, AND I CAN HELP

How you feel

My sadness is bottomless. Often, if not daily, I feel upset. I am never happy, I am constantly low, and I cry a lot. Sometimes I just don’t feel anything at all—I’m numb. I have a complete loss of interest and motivation for life. I wear one face, a stone face, one of total nothingness. But I also experience intense mood swings and have sudden bursts of anger that I cannot control. I have such severe anxiety that it can lead to panic attacks. The doctors are treating me for clinical depression and they gave me some pills and sent me to see a psychologist for therapy. It worked for a while, and then everything stopped working. I just want the pain it to end.

The challenge of depression

Depression is a national and global epidemic. In the United States alone there are 17.3 million people who suffer with depression, and that number is rising at an alarming rate [1]. The cost to the American public is enormous.

The causes of depression

  • HPA-D (formerly known as adrenal fatigue)
  • Sleep disorders
  • Blood sugar control problems
  • Improper exercise
  • Chronic pain or inflammation
  • Stressful life event
  • Combinations of medications
  • Nutritional Deficiencies

What to do when depression medication doesn't work

Studies show that unless a person is severely depressed, antidepressants are minimally beneficial, if that. The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) states: "The magnitude of benefit of antidepressant medication compared with placebo increases with severity of depression symptoms and may be MINIMAL OR NONEXISTENT, on average, in patients with mild or moderate symptoms. For patients with very severe depression, the benefit of medications over placebo is substantial” [2]. To put it plainly, the depression medication you take on a daily basis might be completely useless.

Functional medicine and depression

You and your depression are more than just statistics. In functional medicine, I will listen to you. Depression symptoms vary from person to person, so I will take a comprehensive evaluation, including diagnostic testing, and examine all the body systems (digestion, detox, and neuroendocrine). I will find the root cause of your depression, and then provide unique-to-you nutrition and lifestyle recommendations to help your body heal itself. Read Theresa’s story and let functional medicine speak for itself. You can live a happy life, and I can help.
