Meet Heidi

Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner, Certified Functional Nutritional Therapist, Diagnostic Medical Sonographer, Mom, Dog Lover, Foodie, Kettlebell Athlete, Lover of Self-awareness and Self-realization.
My name is Heidi Toy. I help people all over the world heal by identifying and treating the root cause of their body imbalances. Through diet and nutrition, I guide them towards wholeness and balanced lives.

Why? Because I know what it’s like to be sick and not have answers. I know what it’s like to have your own body fighting against itself. But I experienced healing, and it became my mission to help others take back their health as well.

My Lowest:

Not long ago, I was very sick. I looked healthy on the outside, but felt terrible on the inside. I was exhausted all the time and I would have to leave a party mid-afternoon because I just needed a nap. I was depressed, started gaining weight, and losing my hair. And I was angry all the time.

I tried every conceivable diet. I became a repeat customer to weight watchers on a lose/gain cycle. Weight loss clinics and Jenny Craig were useless. I tried all the “in” shakes, pills, and formulas. And I exercised like crazy. Nothing helped.

I felt like I was unraveling from the inside out - everything was so out of balance.

The doctors didn’t understand and told me it was all in my head. They said to eat less and exercise more. The place that was supposed to have the answers couldn’t help me. I felt hopeless.

“I was scared and too young to be so miserable.”

They wouldn’t help me, so I decided to try my hand at self-diagnosis. Because I was a skilled sonographer, I performed an ultrasound on my thyroid and brought it to an endocrinologist who ordered the official lab. Through this, I discovered I had Hashimoto’s disease. My own immune system was attacking my thyroid.

I went to several doctors for help with my Hashimoto’s and the debilitating symptoms that came with it—weight gain, fatigue, hair loss, depression. Each doctor performed a Thyroid Stimulating Hormone test (TSH) to measure the ability of my thyroid to produce the proper ratio of hormones for my body. Depending on the results, they would increase or decrease my medication to address the symptoms I was experiencing.

The doctors were helping me manage the problem, not solve it.

The REAL problem: I wasn’t getting better.

I Admitted I Couldn't Do It On My Own:

I had been working with a personal trainer for some time, thinking he could help me manage my weight issues. Even he noticed how hard I worked without results. He had previously read an article by a functional medicine practitioner and suggested I see her.

I had no idea who she was. She was expensive. I about fell over when she told me how much six months of her treatment program was going to cost me. And she only accepted cash, check or charge, no insurance. I was definitely skeptical, but I felt so awful about myself and I had tried everything else, so I figured why not give it a shot. I couldn’t get any worse, right?

My main goal was weight loss. I didn’t even care about how I felt as long as I could be skinny and hot again. I was 36 or 37 at the time and I was over it! She ran some tests and, had she been less professional, she could have laughed in my face. The results on my labs showed weight loss was apparently the least of my problems.

My functional medicine practitioner discovered I was gluten intolerant, had many parasites as well as leaky gut syndrome, and I was in a severe state of HPA-D (formerly adrenal fatigue). I also had antibodies towards my myelin sheath—basically, my nervous system was under attack and, if this continued, I could eventually develop Multiple Sclerosis or ALS.

“My body was attacking itself and I had no idea how bad things were. My functional medicine practitioner showed me it was time to get serious about my health.”

I was completely out of whack. We changed my daily diet to a paleo diet specific to those suffering from autoimmune diseases, and then took it a step further to be specific to my personal needs. She recommended that I reduce the amount of exercise I was doing—significantly reduce it. I also added supplements to my routine in order to address the HPA-D, leaky gut syndrome, and parasites. And I added acupuncture.

After two to four months on this new lifestyle plan, I started to feel better.

I had more energy. My hair came back. I lost 23 lbs effortlessly and felt less bloated. I was more centered, more in control. My mood improved significantly and I wasn’t as angry at the world for every small, little thing. Everything began to balance out.

During this healing process, my functional medicine practitioner recommended I consider a career in functional medicine because she thought I would be good at it. So I did, and I am!

“Because I experienced healing and felt that joy of a balanced life again, it became my mission to help others take back their health, just like I did.”

Why Heidi?

She's good at what she does.
Heidi is an intuitive, thoughtful, analytical, and direct person. She tends to spend long periods of time working through problems and forming solutions, and has earned the nickname “Hawkeye” among colleagues and friends. While working as a senior product manager, these traits helped her guide 3,500 engineers in building a first class, premium diagnostic ultrasound system. She uses this same skill set in finding the root cause of her clients’ poor health through functional medicine.

Heidi received her undergraduate degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography from the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire. She is a registered sonographer in all four registries of diagnostic ultrasound: ARDMS (OBGYN and abdominal), RDCS (cardiac), RVT (vascular).

Her backgrounds in the medical field, along with her own story of imbalance, provided an easy transition to a profession in functional medicine. She gained her certification as a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner through Nutritional Therapy Association in 2013. She was mentored and trained by Dr. Dan Kalish at the Kalish Institute for Functional Medicine in 2013 and 2014.

When she is not deep in thought trying to solve the world’s problems, she can be found hanging out with her dog, Freyja or training for Kettlebell Sport. Heidi is a gold place medalist and is a member of the United States Kettlebell Team. She competes both nationally and internationally.
